A bun is a small portion of bread. The word "bun" was created from the word "bread" + the suffix " יָה".
הַלַּחְמָנִיָּה הִיא מְנַת לֶחֶם קְטַנָּה.
הַמִּילָּה לַחְמָנִיָּה נוֹצְרָה מֵהַמִּילָּה לֶחֶם + תּוֹסֶפֶת יָה.
We have some more examples in Hebrew where we add the suffix יָה"" and get a smaller portion, for example: Cake + יָה = Cookie
Sugar + יָה = Candy
יֵשׁ לָנוּ עוֹד כַּמָּה דּוּגְמָאוֹת בְּעִבְרִית שֶׁבָּהֶן אֲנַחְנוּ מוֹסִיפִים אֶת הַתּוֹסֶפֶת יָה וּמְקַבְּלִים מָנָה קְטַנָּה יוֹתֵר, לְמָשָׁל:

We have buns in all kinds, shapes, and flavors. There are braided buns – which look like small challahs. There are square buns, round buns, and elongated buns that you can put a sausage in.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ לַחְמָנִיּוֹת בְּכָל מִינֵי סוּגִים, צוּרוֹת וּטְעָמִים.
יֵשׁ לַחְמָנִיּוֹת צַמָּה – שֶׁנִּרְאוֹת כְּמוֹ חַלּוֹת קְטַנּוֹת.
יֵשׁ לַחְמָנִיּוֹת מְרוּבָּעוֹת, לַחְמָנִיּוֹת עֲגוּלּוֹת וְלַחְמָנִיּוֹת מוּאֲרָכוֹת שֶׁאֶפְשָׁר לְהַכְנִיס לְתוֹכָן נַקְנִיקִיָּה.
