To cross
The infinitive "לחצות" (to cross) has two meanings:
לְשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לַחֲצוֹת' יֵשׁ שְׁתֵּי מַשְׁמָעוּיוֹת:
The first is to divide into halves: For example, I can divide an apple into two parts and give each of my children half an apple.
הַמַּשְׁמָעוּת הָרִאשׁוֹנָה הִיא לַחֲתּוֹךְ לְחֵצִי. אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לַחֲצוֹת אֶת הַתַּפּוּחַ לִשְׁנֵי חֲלָקִים וְלָתֵת לְכָל אֶחָד מֵהַיְּלָדִים שֶׁלִּי חֲצִי תַּפּוּחַ.
And the second is to move from one side to another: For instance, to cross the street or cross a border.
וְהַשְּׁנִיָּה הִיא לַעֲבוֹר מִצַּד לְצַד, לְמָשָׁל: לַחֲצוֹת אֶת הַכְּבִישׁ אוֹ לַחֲצוֹת אֶת הַגְּבוּל.
However, when we talk about "crossing the border," we encounter both a physical meaning—moving from one country to another—and a metaphorical meaning, such as doing things that are unacceptable to someone who then says, "You've crossed the line!"
אֲבָל אִם אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל "לַחֲצוֹת אֶת הַגְּבוּל" אָז יֵשׁ לָנוּ כָּאן מַשְׁמָעוּת פִיזִית, כְּלוֹמַר לַעֲבוֹר מִמְּדִינָה אַחַת לִמְדִינָה שְׁנִיָּה וּמַשְׁמָעוּת מֵטָאפוֹרִית לְמָשָׁל, לַעֲשׂוֹת דְּבָרִים שֶׁאֵינָם מְקוּבָּלִים עַל מִי שֶׁכּוֹעֵס עָלֶיךָ וְאוֹמֵר לְךָ שֶׁהִצְלַחְתָּ לַחֲצוֹת אֶת הַגְּבוּל.
Here are some sentences with the infinitive "to cross":
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לַחֲצוֹת:
1. To improve the city's infrastructure, a new bridge was constructed, allowing vehicles to cross the river more easily and quickly.
1. כְּדֵי לְשַׁפֵּר אֶת הַתַּשְׁתִּיּוֹת בָּעִיר, נִבְנָה גֶּשֶׁר חָדָשׁ שֶׁיְּאַפְשֵׁר לִכְלֵי רֶכֶב לַחֲצוֹת אֶת הַנָּהָר בְּקַלּוּת וּבִמְהִירוּת רַבָּה יוֹתֵר.
2. The Olympic runner managed to cross the finish line and set a new world record.
2. הָרַץ הָאוֹלִימְפִּי הִצְלִיחַ לַחֲצוֹת אֶת קַו הַסִּיּוּם וְקָבַע שִׂיא עוֹלָמִי חָדָשׁ.
3. The team was required to cross the enemy line without being detected in order to carry out the complex mission assigned to them.
3. הַכּוֹחַ נִדְרַשׁ לַחֲצוֹת אֶת קַו הָאוֹיֵב מִבְּלִי שֶׁיְּגַלּוּ אוֹתוֹ כְּדֵי לְבַצֵּעַ אֶת הַמְּשִׂימָה הַמּוּרְכֶּבֶת שֶׁהוּטְּלָה עֲלֵיהֶם.
4. Watch how you behave and be careful not to cross the line!
