Just as we saw the word "salt" within the infinitive "to salt" (להמליח), similarly, we see the word "pepper" within the infinitive "to pepper" (לפלפל).
כְּמוֹ שֶׁרָאִינוּ אֶת הַמֶּלַח בְּתוֹךְ שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהַמְלִיחַ, כָּךְ אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים גַּם אֶת הַפִּלְפֵּל בְּתוֹךְ שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְפַלְפֵּל.
The infinitive verb "to pepper" literally means to add pepper to a salad or food.
שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְפַלְפֵּל פֵּירוּשׁוֹ לְהוֹסִיף פִּלְפֵּל לְסָלָט אוֹ לְאוֹכֶל.
Jewish commentators often "pepper" the scripture in the Torah, meaning they ask questions, critique, and derive new interpretations.
הַפַּרְשָׁנִים הַיְּהוּדִים נוֹהֲגִים לְפַלְפֵּל אֶת הַכָּתוּב בַּתּוֹרָה, כְּלוֹמַר לִשְׁאוׄל שְׁאֵלוֹת, לְהַעֲבִיר בִּקּוֹרֶת וְלִמְצוֹא פַּרְשָׁנוּיוֹת חֲדָשׁוֹת.
However, we can also "pepper" situations, meaning to add life and energy to them. For example: If we are at a party, and the party is a bit dull, we can "pepper" it with a few funny jokes or good music to wake people up to laugh and dance.
