To bake
On Purim, we traditionally bake Hamantaschen (Oznei Haman) and fill them with sweet fillings like poppy seeds or chocolate. However, the infinitive לֶאֱפוֹת (to bake) isn't limited to Purim.
בְּפוּרִים אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לֶאֱפוֹת אָזְנֵי הָמָן וּלְמַלֵּא אוֹתָם בְּמִילּוּי מָתוֹק כְּמוֹ פֶּרֶג אוֹ שׁוֹקוֹלָד.
אֲבָל בְּעֶצֶם, שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לֶאֱפוֹת לֹא קָשׁוּר רַק לְחַג פּוּרִים.
The infinitive לֶאֱפוֹת means to prepare pastries, typically by heating in a baking oven.
שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לֶאֱפוֹת פֵּירוּשׁוֹ לְהָכִין מַאֲפֶה בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל בְּאֶמְצָעוּת חִימּוּם בְּתוֹךְ תַּנּוּר בִּישּׁוּל.
To bake successfully, we need to know three things:
1. Exact quantities of the ingredients.
2. How long to bake for?
3. The temperature at which to bake?
כְּדֵי לֶאֱפוֹת בְּצוּרָה מוּצְלַחַת אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לָדַעַת שְׁלוֹשָׁה דְּבָרִים:
1. כַּמּוּיוֹת מְדוּיָּ קוֹת שֶׁל הַמַּרְכִּיבִים
2. כַּמָּה זְמַן צָרִיךְ לֶאֱפוֹת?
3. מַהִי הַטֶּמְפֶּרָטוּרָה שֶׁבָּהּ צָרִיךְ לֶאֱפוֹת?
We can bake a cake for a birthday, cookies for the kids, and some prefer to bake bread and rolls instead of buying them. And, of course, we can also bake challahs in honor of Shabbat.
אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לֶאֱפוֹת עוּגָה לְיוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת, אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לֶאֱפוֹת עוּגִיּוֹת לַיְּלָדִים וְיֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁמַּעֲדִיפִים לֶאֱפוֹת לֶחֶם וְלַחְמָנִיּוֹת בִּמְקוֹם לִקְנוֹת.
וְאֶפְשָׁר ,כַּמּוּבָן, גַּם לֶאֱפוֹת חַלּוֹת לִכְבוֹד שַׁבָּת.
Here are some sentences with the infinitive verb לֶאֱפוֹת:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לֶאֱפוֹת:
1. I prefer to bake challahs for Shabbat at home rather than buying them.
1. אֲנִי מַעֲדִיפָה לֶאֱפוֹת חַלּוֹת לְשַׁבָּת בַּבַּיִת וְלֹא לִקְנוֹת.
2. I love baking apple pie, but my children don't like apple pie, so there's no one to eat the pie with me.
2. אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת לֶאֱפוֹת פַּאי תַּפּוּחִים, אֲבָל הַיְּלָדִים שֶׁלִּי לֹא אוֹהֲבִים פַּאי תַּפּוּחִים, אָז אֵין מִי שֶׁיֹּאכַל אִיתִּי אֶת הַפַּאי.
3. The culinary team at the hotel invested many hours in baking artfully designed desserts that look like works of art.
3. הַצֶּוֶת הַקּוּלִינָרִי בַּמָּלוֹן הִשְׁקִיעַ שָׁעוֹת רַבּוֹת כְּדֵי לֶאֱפוֹת קִינּוּחִים מְעוּצָּבִים שֶׁיֵּרָאוּ כְּמוֹ יְצִירוֹת אָמָּנוּת.
4. The teacher asked the mother of the child who is celebrating his birthday in class next week to bake a gluten-free cake to accommodate children with this sensitivity.
4. הַמּוֹרָה בִּקְּשָׁה מֵאִמּוֹ שֶׁל הַיֶּלֶד שֶׁחוֹגֵג יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת בַּכִּתָּה בַּשָּׁבוּעַ הַבָּא לֶאֱפוֹת עוּגָה לְלֹא גְּלוּטֶן כְּדֵי לָתֵת מַעֲנֶה לִילָדִים בַּעֲלֵי הָרְגִישׁוּת הַזֹּאת.
