To get drunk
The infinitive לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר (to get drunk) reminds us of the word שֵׁיכָר (shechar), which means wine. In other words, לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר means to drink a lot of wine.
שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר מַזְכִּיר לָנוּ אֶת הַמִּילָּה שֵׁיכָר. שֵׁיכָר = יַיִן.
כְּלוֹמַר, לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר מַשְׁמָעוּתוֹ לִשְׁתּוֹת הַרְבֵּה יַיִן.
One of the commandments of Purim is to drink wine "Ad d'lo yada"—that is, a person is supposed to get drunk until they cannot distinguish between good and bad.
אַחַת מִמִּצְווֹת חַג הַפּוּרִים הִיא לִשְׁתּוֹת יַיִן "עַד דְּלֺא יָדַע", כְּלוֹמַר אָדָם צָרִיךְ לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר עַד שֶׁלֹּא יֵדַע לְהַבְחִין בֵּין טוֹב לְרַע.
I don't entirely agree with this commandment, and I've also heard rabbis say that one should drink wine but not get drunk.
אֲנִי לֹא כָּל כָּךְ מַסְכִּימָה עִם הַמִּצְוָה , וְשָׁמַעְתִּי גַּם רַבָּנִים שֶׁאוֹמְרִים שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לִשְׁתּוֹת יַיִן, אֲבָל לֹא לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר.
In any case, if you intend to go out and get drunk, you must find someone who will drive you back home, because anyone who wants to get drunk cannot drive!
בְּכָל מִקְרֶה, אִם אַתָּה מִתְכַּוֵּן לָצֵאת וּלְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר אַתָּה חַיָּב לִמְצוֹא מִישֶׁהוּא שֶׁיִּנְהַג חֲזָרָה הַבַּיְתָה, כִּי מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר לֹא יָכוֹל לִנְהוֹג!
Here are some sentences with the infinitive verb לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר:
1. Good friends usually meet once a week to get drunk together and share their experiences from the past week.
1. הַחֲבֵרִים הַטּוֹבִים נוֹהֲגִים לְהִפָּגֵשׁ פַּעַם בְּשָׁבוּעַ כְּדֵי לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר בְּיַחַד וּלְשַׁתֵּף זֶה אֶת זֶה בַּחֲוָיוֹת מֵהַשָּׁבוּעַ שֶׁעָבַר עֲלֵיהֶם.
2. On New Year's Eve, some of the partygoers continued drinking alcoholic beverages to get drunk, laugh, and dance until dawn.
2. בְּלֵיל הַשָּׁנָה הַחֲדָשָׁה, חֵלֶק מֵהַמּ ִשְׁתַּתְּפִים בַּמְּסִיבָּה הִמְשִׁיכוּ לִשְׁתּוֹת מַשְׁקָאוֹת חֲרִיפִים לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר, לִצְחוֹק וְלִרְקוֹד עַד עֲלוֹת הַשַּׁחַר.
3. One of our group's friends doesn't like to get drunk. He doesn't drink alcohol at all, so he is always the designated driver.
3. אֶחָד מֵהַחֲבֵרִים בַּחֲבוּרָה שֶׁלָּנוּ לֹא נוֹהֵג לְהִשְׁתַּכֵּר. הוּא בִּכְלָל לֹא שׁוֹתֶה אַלְכּוֹהוֹל אָז הוּא תָּמִיד בְּתַפְקִיד הַנֶּהָג הַתּוֹרָן.
4. The soldiers who completed their military service decided to meet and get slightly drunk to celebrate the end of this chapter in their lives.
4. הַחַיָּלִים שֶׁסִּיְּמוּ אֶת הַשֵּׁירוּת הַצְּבָאִי הֶחְלִיטוּ לְהִפָּגֵשׁ וּלְהִשְׂתַּכֵּר מְעַט כְּדֵי לַחֲגּוֹג אֶת סִיּוּם הַפֶּרֶק הַזֶּה בְּחַיֵּיהֶם.
