Until half of the kingdom\reign
The origin of this expression is in the Book of Esther. Esther approached Ahasuerus, the king of Persia, to request that he save her people from Haman's plans.
מְקוֹרוֹ שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הוּא בִּמְגִילַּת אֶסְתֵּר. אֶסְתֵּר בָּאָה לְבַקֵּשׁ מֵאֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ, מֶלֶךְ פָּרַס, לְהַצִּיל אֶת בְּנֵי עַמָּהּ מִתָּכְנִיּוֹתָיו שֶׁל הָמָן.
Esther came to Ahasuerus and said to him: "I have a request." Ahasuerus replied: "What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it shall be given to you."
אֶסְתֵּר מַגִּיעָה אֶל אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ וְאוֹמֶרֶת לוֹ: יֵשׁ לִי בַּקָּשָׁה.
אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ עוֹנֶה לָהּ: מַה בַּקָּשָׁתֵךְ? עַד חֲצִי הַמַּלְכוּת תִּנָּתֵן לָךְ.
Ahasuerus intended to show Esther that he would gladly fulfill her request.
אחשׁרושׁ מִתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר לְאֶסְתֵּר שֶׁהוּא יֵעָנֶה בְּשִׂמְחָה לְבַקָּשָׁתָהּ.
To this day, we use this expression in the same way. When someone asks me for something and I want to show them my willingness to fulfill their request, I say to them: "Even up to half the kingdom."
כָּךְ אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּבִיטּוּי זֶה עַד הַיּוֹם. כְּשֶׁמִּישֶׁהוּא בָּא לְבַקֵּשׁ מִמֶּנִּי מַשֶּׁהוּ וַאֲנִי רוֹצָה לְהַרְאוֹת לוֹ אֶת נְכוֹנוּתִי לְהֵעָנוֹת לְבַקָּשָׁתוֹ, אֲנִי אֺמַר לוֹ: "עַד חֲצִי הַמַּלְכוּת".
