נָדְדָה שְׁנָתוֹ

His sleep wandered
The expression "נָדְדָה שְׁנָתוֹ" means: he could not fall asleep, and its origin is in the Book of Esther.
הַבִּיטּוּי "נָדְדָה שְׁנָתוֹ" פֵּרוּשׁוֹ: לֹא הִצְלִיחַ לְהֵרָדֵם, וּמְקוֹרוֹ בִּמְגִילַּת אֶסְתֵּר.
It is told about King Ahasuerus that on the night his sleep was disturbed, he asked his servants to bring him the Book of Chronicles, and there he read that Mordechai the Jew had saved his life from an assassination attempt.
מְסוּפָּר עַל הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ שֶׁבְּאוֹתוֹ לַיְלָה שֶׁנָּדְדָה שְׁנָתוֹ הוּא בִּקֵּשׁ מִמְּשָׁרְתָיו לְהָבִיא לוֹ אֶת סֵפֶר הַזִּכְרוֹנוֹת, וְשָׁם קָרָא שֶׁמָּרְדְּכַי הַיְּהוּדִי הִצִּיל אוֹתוֹ מִנִּסָּיוֹן הִתְנַקְּשׁוּת בְּחַיָּיו.
Thank God the king's sleep was disturbed. Because of this, he learned that Mordechai the Jew had saved his life.
תּוֹדָה לָאֵל שֶׁנָּדְדָה שְׁנָתוֹ שֶׁל הַמֶּלֶךְ. בִּזְכוּת הָעוּבְדָּה שֶׁנָּדְדָה שְׁנָתוֹ שֶׁל הַמֶּלֶךְ, נוֹדַע לוֹ עַל כָּךְ שֶׁמָּרְדְּכַי הַיְּהוּדִי הִצִּיל אֶת חַיָּיו.
We also use this expression in everyday Hebrew. Some people count sheep when they can't sleep. Some people take sleeping pills when their sleep is disturbed. I wish you all a good night's sleep without any sleep disturbances.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה גַּם בְּעִבְרִית יוֹמְיוֹמִית.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר שְׁנָתָם נוֹדֶדֶת הֵם סוֹפְרִים כְּבָשִׂים.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר שְׁנָתָם נוֹדֶדֶת הֵם לוֹקְחִים כַּדּוּר שֵׁינָה.
אֲנִי מְאַחֶלֶת לָכֶם שְׁנַת לַיְלָה טוֹבָה לְלֹא נְדוּדֵי שֵׁינָה.
