הוּא יוֹדֵעַ בְּאֵיזֶה צַד שֶׁל הַפְּרוּסָה מְרוּחָה הַחֶמְאָה

He knows on what side of the slice of bread the butter is spread
Isn't it true that when we spread butter on a slice of bread, we leave the buttered side up?
נָכוֹן שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מוֹרְחִים חֶמְאָה עַל פְּרוּסָה אֲנַחְנוּ מַשְׁאִירִים אֶת הַצַּד שֶׁעָלָיו מְרוּחָה הַחֶמְאָה לְמַעֲלָה?
We use this expression when we talk about people who have a special ability and know how to choose the right side in order to stay on top.
כָּךְ אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהֶם יְכוֹלֶת מְיוּחֶדֶת וְהֵם יוֹדְעִים לִבְחוֹר אֶת הַצַּד הַנָּכוֹן כְּדֵי לְהִשָּׁאֵר לְמַעֲלָה.
There are also those who use this expression cynically about a person who chooses to identify with the side that is most beneficial to him, meaning the side from which he can gain the most benefit.
יֵשׁ גַּם כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּצִינִיּוּת עַל אָדָם שֶׁבּוֹחֵר לְהִזְדַּהוֹת עִם הַצַּד שֶׁכְּדַאי לוֹ בְּי וֹתֵר, כְּלוֹמַר הַצַּד שֶׁמִּמֶּנּוֺהוּא יָכוֹל לְהָפִיק אֶת הַתּוֹעֶלֶת הָרַבָּה בְּיוֹתֵר.
Sometimes we hear about politicians switching parties because they believe the new party they have joined will win the elections. If they are right, we say that they know on which side the bread is buttered.
לִפְעָמִים אֲנַחְנוּ שׁוֹמְעִים עַל פּוֹלִיטִיקָאִים שֶׁעוֹבְרִים מִמִּפְלָגָה לְמִפְלָגָה כִּי הֵם חוֹשְׁבִים שֶׁהַמִּפְלָגָה הַחֲדָשָׁה שֶׁאֵלֶיהָ עָבְרוּ תִּזְכֶּה בַּבְּחִירוֹת. אִם הֵם צָדְקוּ נֺאמַר עֲלֵיהֶם שֶׁהֵם יוֹדְעִים בְּאֵיזֶה צַד שֶׁל הַפְּרוּסָה מְרוּחָה הַחֶמְאָה.
