כְּשׁוֹשַׁנָּה בֵּין הַחוֹחִים

As a rose among the thorns
חוֹחִים =Thorns
In nature, the rose indeed grows within a bush of thorns.
חוֹחִים = קוֹצִים
בַּטֶּבַע הַשּׁוֹשַׁנָּה אָכֵן צוֹמַחַת בְּתוֹךְ שִׂיחַ שֶׁל קוֹצִים.
The origin of this expression is from the Song of Songs, Chapter 2, Verse 2. The groom, who uses this expression, compares his bride to other women he has known. He says there is no comparison, just as it is impossible to compare a rose to thorns.
מְקוֹר הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הוּא מִשִּׁיר הַשִּׁירִים פֶּרֶק ב' פּס' ב'. הֶחָתָן שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מַשְׁוֶה אֶת כַּלָּתוֹ לְבָנוֹת אֲחֵרוֹת שֶׁהִכִּיר. הוּא אוֹמֵר שֶׁאֵין מָה לְהַשְׁווֹת, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהַשְׁווֹת בֵּין שׁוֹשַׁנָּה לְבֵין קוֹצִים.
When we use this expression today, we mean that there is something good, beautiful, or special in the midst of an unfavorable environment.
כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּיָמֵינוּ אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ מַשֶּׁהוּ טוֹב אוֹ יָפֶה אוֹ מְיוּחָד בְּתוֹךְ סְבִיבָה לֹא טוֹבָה.
For example, if someone grew up in a bad neighborhood—a neighborhood where most of the residents are involved in crime—but they succeeded in studying, progressing, and leading an upright life, we would say about them that they are "like a rose among the thorns."
לְדוּגְמָא: אִם יֵשׁ מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁגָּדַל בִּשְׁכוּנָה לֹא טוֹבָה, כְּלוֹמַר שְׁכוּנָה שֶׁבָּהּ רוֹב הַמִּתְגּוֹרְרִים בָּהּ עוֹסְקִים בְּפֶשַׁע וְהוּא הִצְלִיחַ לִלְמוֹד לְהִתְקַדֵּם וּלְנַהֵל אֶת חַיָּיו עַל דֶּרֶךְ הַיָּשָׁר, נֺאמַר עָלָיו שֶׁהוּא כְּשׁוֹשַׁנָּה בֵּין הַחוֹחִים.
